Описание на категорията

International Mavrud Day is celebrated annually on October 26th — St. Demetrius Day — and is dedicated to one of Bulgaria’s oldest and most distinctive grape varieties: Mavrud. The day aims to promote Bulgarian wine and wine tourism both in Bulgaria and abroad (International Mavrud Day).

History and Legends

Mavrud is a red wine grape variety mainly grown in the Thracian Plain, around Asenovgrad and Perushtitsa. According to one legend, during the reign of Khan Krum, all vineyards in Bulgaria were destroyed. However, a young man named Mavrud continued to cultivate a vineyard and produce wine. When Khan Krum learned about this, he restored viticulture and decreed that the variety should bear the name of the brave young man (BNR News).

Another legend tells that during the Crimean War, the French used Mavrud wine supplied from Asenovgrad to boost the morale of their soldiers (International Mavrud Day).
