In 1998, Robert G. Wilmers, a Harvard-educated banker and his French wife, bought the Graves Cru Classé estate Château Haut-Bailly, located in the Léognan district. They do not save costs and in 2000 they started a program of total renovation. Haut-Bailly has 28 hectares of vines located in the heights around the village, on gravelly soil. The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (25%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). Aged in 50% new oak barrels for 15 months and bottled without filtration. Rose is also made in small quantities from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, which is distinguished by the special freshness of the variety. As a result of hard work and large investments, Chateau Haut-Bailly is in the highest class in the Pessac-Léognan area.
