The Danube Plain is one of Bulgaria’s major wine regions, located in the northern part of the country – between the Danube River to the north and the Balkan Mountains to the south. The region stretches from the western border with Serbia to the Black Sea and offers diverse terroirs that provide excellent conditions for viticulture.
Climate & Terroir
The climate is moderately continental, with hot, dry summers and cold but relatively short winters. This combination allows grapes to develop rich sugars and aromas while preserving a refreshing acidity.
Soils: Chernozem, clay-limestone, and sandy terrains, ensuring good drainage and balanced mineral content.
Sunlight: Over 2,100 hours of sunshine per year – a key factor for the wines’ rich taste.
Winemaking Traditions
Viticulture in the Danube Plain has a history dating back to the Thracians and Romans. In modern times, the region has become known for producing aromatic white wines, elegant reds, and high-quality dessert wines.
