Gran Moraine

The name Gran Moraine comes from the catastrophic floods and movements of glaciers in northern Willamette Valley, Oregon during the last ice age. They leave behind dry rivers of stones, like the Côte-d’Or in Burgundy (and the Morenas of Vitosha, which are much larger). Nearly 90 hectares in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA (American Viticultural Area) are planted with the classic Burgundy varieties Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This area was classified in 2004 to mark the site with the oldest marine sediment-based soils in the entire Willamette Valley. Together with the climate, they create conditions for making wines with a specific and different profile from that of the neighboring regions. These are Oregon wines in the tradition and spirit of classic Burgundy.
