Lyrarakis
Lyrarakis is a family wine cellar that has been producing high quality wines since 1966 with a strong emphasis on rare local Cretan varieties and produces single varieties of wine. The winery is located south of the capital of Crete - Heraklion, the grapes are grown at 550 meters above sea level, surrounded by the idyllic setting of the vineyards and mountains of Lasithi. The owners of the winery are credited with reviving two ancient Cretan varieties, Daphne and Plito, as well as contributing to the third "grape treasure" - the Melisaki variety, which is also grown in their vineyards.

Vilana is a white wine grape variety grown mainly on the island of Crete in Greece. It is traditionally used to make light, delicate varietal wines with citrus and floral aromas. However, more recent producers are experimenting with aging in oak and blend with international varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc. The Peza appelation located near the capital of Heraklion, requires its white wines to be 100% Vilana. Here, higher altitudes and poor, sandy soils help limit the variety's natural propensity for high yields. Villana is also a challenge in the winery, as it has a tendency to rapid oxidation and special care is needed to preserve the freshness of the variety. The characteristic deep yellow color of the variety makes it sought after for giving depth to white wines from other varieties of white grapes grown on the island. The most commonly used are Sauvignon Blanc, Silvaner, Muscat and Malvasia. Varietal wines vary in their alcohol content from low to moderately high and show an aromatic spectrum ranging from lemon and orange to apple and pear. Lighter and fresher ones are often drunk in the first few years, but those that mature in oak can benefit from some extra aging in the bottle.
